CASTING CALL FOR "PURSUED BY A BEAR PLAY READING SERIES"

SCA is so pleased to announce casting calls for our Pursued By A Bear Play Reading Series!  (For those who may not know, the title is actually Shakespeare's most famous stage direction, taken from The Winter's Tale.)

A play reading is not a full production with sets, costumes, props, or blocking.  Instead, performers are rehearsed just a few times in order to present a show simply with the scripts in hand and minimal movement.  For audiences, it's an excellent way to experience a great theatrical work because the meaning, the relationships, and the plot remain intact.  For actors, it is an exciting opportunity to hone one's craft and develop new skills.

This program is for all ages and levels of ability-- we encourage everyone in the community to get involved!  Theatre is one of the most collaborative art forms and it truly takes a village to put on a show.  Thankfully, we live in the best community on the map!

No need to prepare anything in advance-- sides will be provided.  Except for the first round of casting calls for Much Ado & Inherit the Wind (which will be held in the Pottery Studio), the second round of casting calls, rehearsals, & performances will be held in 43 Pioneer Street, Cooperstown.

Much Ado About Nothing

Much Ado About Nothing is one of Shakespeare's most beloved comedies.  It explores the thin line between love and hate, betrayal, and mistaken identity with some of the wittiest dialogue ever written.  Chosen to coincide with Winter Carnival's fabulous "British Invasion" theme, this is a must for Bard enthusiasts.

Inherit the Wind

Inherit the Wind is one of the most incendiary and captivating courtroom dramas ever written.  Revolving around the real-life circumstances and people involved in the famous Scopes Monkey Trial, this play explores the "missing link": that which exists between science and religion.  Still a hot button issue today, evolution and education are on trial against persecution and traditional values.  How will the jury rule?

The Children's Hour

An angry student, Mary Tilford, runs away from the school and to avoid being sent back she tells her grandmother that the two headmistresses are having an affair. The accusation has stunning life altering consequences.  A show that is still controversial and relevant decades after it was first staged.

We all know the story of Charlie, the poor boy whose dreams come true in Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory.  Now, the kids in our own community have the opportunity to experience the magic.  Directed by local kid extraordinaire Jonah Groom.  Fun for the entire family!

Why Theatre?

Theatre has the power to reach deep into our hearts and minds.  By sharing stories and the human experience, we learn to empathize and understand one another.

As actors and audiences, we can explore and transform.  How often do we wish we could go somewhere new or be someone else, even if only for a day?  On stage, all things are possible.

Through theatre we learn.  Why do people do and say the things they say?  What inspires us?  What do we fear?  Plays answer these questions... and also poses new ones with which to grapple.

Most important... it's just so much fun!

First Table Read

The Compleat Works of Shakespeare Abridged

By Adam Long, Daniel Singer, & Jess Winfield

Directed by Danielle Newell

Starring Michael Henrici, Steve Dillon, & Tio Schluter IV

Stage Manager...
Rebecca Ortenberg

Assistant SM...
Kate O'Handley

(Teaser Video shows our very first table read-- already a riot!)

SCA's Glimmer Globe Theatre is currently rehearsing our production of The Compleat Works of Shakespeare Abridged for a 2013 winter and spring tour to theatres and schools throughout New York.  This play is a hilarious spoof in the spirit of Monty Python that lovingly and ludicrously condenses all of Shakespeare into 90 minutes with all the parts played by 3 men.  Much loved by adults and children alike, it is an excellent hook to get young people interested in Shakespeare, which is why the production is accompanied by a teaching tool-- a resource guide filled with information, lessons, and activities that teachers may use both before and after the performance to further their students' learning.  The cast and director will also lead pre and post show discussions, as well as a question and answer session.
$500 to book.  Contact director@smithyarts.org  for more information.

About the Theatre:
Since its inception on a wintry night in February of 2010, Glimmer Globe Theatre Company & Acting Studio has generated a great deal of buzz and excitement within Cooperstown- a village already brimming with arts enthusiasts but lacking a strong theatre dimension. The company's founder, Danielle Newell, herself an Actors' Equity member and graduate of NYU's Master's program in Theatre and Theatre Education, originally sought to launch as an independent theatre company. Happy circumstances led her to become the Executive Director of Smithy Center for the Arts.  Now, both she and her theatre have a home!

In 2010 and 2011, Glimmer Globe's main focus was on the Acting Studio, with classes for children, teens, and adults running year-round with quarterly performance showcases open to the community.  In addition, Glimmer Globe presented-- and continues to present-- plays produced by other companies in Central New York and Manhattan, laying foundations for collaborations to come.

2012 saw the true birth of the in-house production company.  In league with Cooperstown Theatre Festival (our beautiful venue courtesy of Margarita Malinova), American Renaissance Theater Company,  and two of the founders of Oneonta Theatre Stage Players, Glimmer Globe put forth its first full season of live shows with Laundry & Bourbon, Lone Star, SummerWorks, and Love, Loss, & What I Wore.  The plays were met with tremendous enthusiasm and support from the community, as well as overwhelmingly positive reviews.  Also thrilling was the introduction of a new program to the Acting Studio, Midsummer Madness, a weekend intensive on performing Shakespeare taught by renowned NYC coach, Melinda Hall.

In the fall of 2012, a new Performing Arts Committee was formed by the Smithy Center for the Arts Board of Directors.  Led by board member and community favorite Dr. Donald Raddatz, the committee consists of four other members: Steve Dillon (radio DJ, TV talk show host, and Founding Artistic Director of Oneonta Theatre Stage Players), Michael Henrici (professional actor, graduate of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, and Commissioner for Voting in Otsego County), Rebecca Sciallo (English teacher and drama coach/director for Cooperstown School District), and William Walker (musician, author, and professor at Cooperstown Graduate Program.)  Plans for the 2013 season are already in development and include a tour of The Compleat Works of Shakespeare Abridged to schools and venues throughout New York, as well as a new "Community Theatre Coalition" that will get everyone involved in the exciting theatre-making process through workshops, productions, and festivals.

The mission of Glimmer Globe and its three tiers (acting studio, resident company, and community theatre coalition) is to make Cooperstown the hub of theatre arts in the region, attracting established artists and theatre-lovers alike with our innovative programs, quality productions, experienced professionals, and beautiful facilities.  We accomplish this by
actively engaging the community and being responsive to the needs, moods, and concerns of society at large so that the theatre is current, constantly challenging, ever evolving... and fun!

We also aim to draw new audiences to the village, thus benefiting the local economy. To that end, Glimmer Globe is eager to work very closely with businesses in the area. To discuss mutually beneficial cross-marketing campaigns and sponsorship opportunities, please contact Danielle Newell at director@smithyarts.org.

Step up, get involved, try something new or re-discover old passions! Glimmer Globe Theatre Company & Acting Studio is your source for creative growth and real-life-changing make-believe experiences!
